PO (Provocative Operation) - Lateral Thinking Device

PO is a device used in lateral thinking to introduce provocative statements that move thinking forward without judgment. It can be used privately or in communication, and is explained as a special form of 'suppose'.

THE IDEA

The one sided use of PO

PO is a device for use in one’s own thinking and reacting as well as in communication with other people. In fact it is probably of more use in enabling one to use lateral thinking oneself than in allowing the use of lateral thinking in group discussions. This private use of PO obviously does not depend on other people understanding its function. In communication however it may come about that one person uses PO and the other person has no idea what it means. In that case one does not desist from using PO but explains what it means. If in difficulty one could always say that it was a special form of ‘suppose’.

When to use it

  • During product design brainstorming to generate novel ideas without immediate critique.

  • In conflict resolution to explore alternative perspectives by proposing provocative scenarios.

  • In personal problem-solving to break out of mental ruts and consider unconventional solutions.

  • In education to encourage creative thinking in students by introducing 'suppose' statements.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Brainstorming a new product feature

During a team meeting, someone says 'PO: What if our product was completely voice-controlled?' This provocative statement allows the team to explore possibilities without immediately judging feasibility, leading to innovative ideas.

02

Personal problem-solving

While stuck on a tricky problem, you say to yourself 'PO: Suppose the solution is to do nothing.' This challenges your assumption that action is required and may open up new insights.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. How can you use PO to challenge your own assumptions in a current decision?

  2. In what situations might PO be more effective than traditional yes/no evaluation?

  3. What would happen if you applied PO to a problem where you feel stuck?
