Temporary Sanity

In Taleb’s portrait of Nero, a switch from statistics to philosophy is called a moment of temporary sanity. The phrase captures a choice that fits Nero’s interests despite disappointing an adviser’s expectations.

THE IDEA

Temporary sanity is Nero’s phrase for changing direction in Taleb’s account. It describes a character’s choice rather than a distinct cognitive mechanism.

Nero’s Story

Nero studied ancient literature and mathematics at Cambridge University, then entered a statistics PhD program at the University of Chicago. After completing coursework and much of his research, he switched to philosophy, calling it a moment of temporary sanity. His thesis director objected. Nero nevertheless completed a thesis on statistical inference in the social sciences, retaining the mathematical work while examining its assumptions more closely.

He later left philosophy because academic debates no longer held his interest. Seeking action, he trained on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and became a proprietary trader. He moved to New York, then stepped back from organizational ambition and business jargon, preferring the independence of trading for his own account.

Nero’s choices reflect his curiosity and temperament. The story invites a question: does the path you are following still suit what you want to do?

When to use it

  • Deciding to change careers after years of training, even if it means starting over.

  • Choosing to pursue a creative passion over a stable, well-paying job.

  • Making a sudden relocation to a new country or city based on intuition.

  • Opting out of a promotion to avoid administrative responsibilities and maintain personal freedom.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Nero's switch from statistics to philosophy

After completing coursework and most of his PhD research in statistics, Nero switched to philosophy, calling it 'a moment of temporary sanity.' This move seemed irrational to his advisors but aligned with his intellectual curiosity and desire for deeper thought.

02

Nero's career change to proprietary trading

Nero’s preference for proprietary trading lets him pursue the work while limiting administrative responsibilities and organizational ambition. In the portrait, independence matters more to him than a conventional advancement path.
