Strength in Action: Leveraging Inertia Through Rules
Establish personal rules to create rituals that harness the same inertia that normally trips us up, turning stubbornness into a tool for positive change.
THE IDEA
Parrish suggests turning a desired behavior into a rule that, through repetition, becomes a ritual. He writes: "Rules create rituals that have inertia—and in this way this rule uses the very aspect of human nature that gets us in trouble for good."
Choose a behavior and give it a clear cue, such as "I will meditate for 5 minutes after waking up". Repeating it in the same context may make it easier to begin without deciding afresh each time. Review whether the routine continues to serve its purpose.
When to use it
Building a consistent exercise habit by instituting a non-negotiable daily rule.
Setting a regular start time for studying.
Overcoming bedtime procrastination by setting a firm rule that becomes an evening ritual.
Using a repeatable morning routine to make it easier to start planned work.
FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE
In practice
Morning Exercise Rule
Set a rule: 'Every day at 7am, I will do 10 pushups and 10 squats.' With repetition, the scheduled cue may make it easier to begin even on low-motivation days.
Sunday Planning Ritual
Create a rule to review your goals every Sunday evening for 20 minutes. Reserving that time gives you a regular opportunity to plan the coming week.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
Put it to work.
What specific rule could you implement today that, if turned into a ritual, would most improve your life?
Where do you currently experience negative inertia (e.g., bad habits), and how might you design a counter-rule to redirect that force?
How can you make your desired rule simple and repeatable enough to become an automatic ritual?
