Set Goals

Setting realistic goals and breaking them into manageable steps helps resilient people cope with crisis situations by providing a clear path forward.

THE IDEA

Set Goals

Resilient people can realistically see crisis situations and set sensible goals to solve the problem. When you feel overwhelmed, you need to take a break to assess what you are facing. Think of possible solutions and split them into manageable steps.

When to use it

  • When facing a complex project at work, set milestones and deadlines to track progress.

  • During a personal crisis, create a list of immediate actions and long-term goals to regain control.

  • When learning a new skill, break it into daily practice sessions with specific objectives.

  • In a team setting, divide a large task into smaller assignments for each member.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Job Loss Crisis

After being laid off, a person sets a goal to find a new job within three months. They break it into steps: update resume, reach out to five contacts per week, apply to ten jobs weekly, and practice interview questions.

02

Academic Overwhelm

A student feeling overwhelmed by a final project sets the goal to complete it in two weeks. Steps include: outline the paper, research one section per day, write a draft, and review with a peer.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. What is a current challenge you are facing? How can you break it into manageable steps?

  2. Think of a past situation where you felt overwhelmed. How might setting clear goals have helped?

  3. What small step can you take today toward a larger goal you've been avoiding?
