Pain, Chemicals and Diseases

Physical or mental pain, chemical influences (drugs, alcohol, stimulants), and illnesses can impair clear thinking and decision-making by causing fear, anger, stress, and sensory distortion.

THE IDEA

Pain, Chemicals and Diseases

"Pain upsets and destroys the nature of the person who feels it." - Aristotle

"I can't think clearly because I am drunk. I don't care about the consequences if I act violent."

We can become confused when we are in pain, under the influence of chemicals or have a physical or mental illness. Physical and mental pain may cause fear, anger and stress. Chemical changes magnify the pain and can cause depression.

Drugs and other substances, including nicotine, alcohol, and coffee, can affect thinking and perception.

When to use it

  • In a medical setting, a doctor should account for a patient's pain or medication when discussing treatment options.

  • When resolving a conflict, consider whether the parties are under the influence of substances or emotional distress.

  • Before making an important decision, check if you are experiencing any physical or mental pain that might cloud your judgment.

  • In addiction recovery, recognize that cravings and withdrawal symptoms impair clear thinking, so design support systems accordingly.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Drunk and Violent

A person under the influence of alcohol loses the ability to think clearly and may act violently without considering consequences.

02

Chronic Pain and Depression

Someone suffering from chronic back pain may become irritable, anxious, and unable to focus on work or personal relationships, leading to poor decisions.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. Think of a time when you were in pain or under the influence of a substance. How did it affect your ability to make rational decisions?

  2. How can you prepare or set up safeguards for moments when you might be experiencing pain or chemical influence?

  3. What steps can you take to improve your judgment when you notice you are ill or stressed?
