Give Him No Control over Others

Reds have an intense need to control people and their actions, not just facts or details; lacking this control leads to frustration.

THE IDEA

Give Him No Control over Others

A Red’s need for control can be extensive. It’s not about controlling facts and details. They want to control people — what they do, how they do it, and so on. Without this control, a Red gets very frustrated.

When to use it

  • When managing a Red employee, provide clear boundaries and decision-making authority to reduce their urge to micromanage peers.

  • When negotiating with a Red partner, offer them control over specific process steps while retaining final decisions on key outcomes.

  • When parenting a Red child, allow them structured choices (e.g., which chore to do first) to give a sense of control without dominating others.

  • When a Red team member conflicts with colleagues, mediate by establishing explicit rules of autonomy so the Red feels their need for control is respected but limited.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Micromanaging Manager

A Red manager assigns tasks to their team but insists on approving every minor decision, reviewing every email draft, and directing the exact steps. When team members take initiative without permission, the Red becomes visibly agitated and may override their work.

02

Controlling Parent

A Red parent schedules every minute of their child's day with structured activities, chooses their friends, and dictates study methods. The child's attempt to choose their own hobby causes the Red to feel a loss of control, leading to arguments.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. In what relationships or situations do you observe a strong need to control other people's actions? How does that affect the dynamic?

  2. How might you satisfy a Red’s need for influence without giving them full control over others?

  3. What internal frustrations arise when you lack control over people, and how can you manage them constructively?
